n8n vs Zapier vs Make: Which Automation Platform Fits Your Business?

An honest comparison of n8n, Zapier and Make: pricing models, flexibility, AI capabilities and self-hosting — and which kinds of businesses each platform suits best.

Zapier, Make and n8n all connect your apps and move data between them, but they are built for different users and priced on different logic. Picking the wrong one is rarely fatal — it just gets expensive or limiting at exactly the moment your automation starts to matter. Here is the honest breakdown we give our own clients.

The one-paragraph version of each

Zapier is the easiest on-ramp: the largest app directory in the category, a gentle editor, and automations that non-technical users can build in minutes. Make offers a more visual, flowchart-style builder with stronger data handling, popular with operations teams that outgrow Zapier's simplicity. n8n is the engineer's platform: open source at its core, self-hostable, comfortable with code and complex logic, and increasingly strong on AI workflows and agents.

Pricing models — the difference that compounds

For a handful of simple automations, all three are inexpensive. The gap appears at volume and complexity — exactly where serious business processes live.

Flexibility and AI

Zapier deliberately limits complexity in favor of simplicity. Make allows branching, iteration and built-in data stores. n8n goes furthest: custom code nodes, self-hosted data control, and AI building blocks — LLM chains, tools, memory — that treat AI as a native part of the workflow rather than an add-on. If your automation needs to read, judge and draft, not just copy, that difference matters.

So which one fits you?

We build on n8n — as an n8n automation agency, it is our home turf — and we also migrate clients off Zapier or Make when they hit the ceiling. But we regularly tell prospects with three simple Zaps to stay exactly where they are. The platform should fit the process, not the other way around.
